The Myth of Abraham Lincoln: Should Confederate Descendants Celebrate It?

Compatriot Greg Clemmer has written that Mr. Lincoln's birthday is celebrated by a number of historical organizations, including one that is Confederate.  Mr. Clemmer suggests that some of us may want to show up at the Lincoln Memorial to take part in such an occasion.

I speak only for myself, but I say, count me out.

  1. As a lad growing up in Georgia, we certainly celebrated February 12, but as "Georgia Day", the day the first settlers landed in Savannah. Of course, this was before the abomination known as President's Day was created, so we celebrated Washington's birthday on February 22. While I would not celebrate Lincoln's birthday because I do not consider him as an equal with Washington, I also strongly believe that his assassination was very harmful to the South. Had Lincoln lived, I believe that the South would have been spared the pain of Reconstruction, that in some ways was more destructive than the war itself.

  2. James, yes Lincoln's assassination (occurring when it did) was very harmful to the South; it merely stoked Northern hatred and a desire for revenge and accomplished nothing good. John Wilkes Booth was a fool.
