These TV spots would probably be more wonderful if there was some attention given to accuracy. Lincoln did not "offer" the Corwin amendment or it would have been the "Lincoln amendment." That would have been difficult as Lincoln was not a member of either house of Congress. Thomas Corwin offered the Corwin amendment as anybody that cares for accuracy in history knows. That might even be the reason its called the "Corwin Amendment." Also Lincoln did not "lobby" for the amendment. In fact as he correctly states in his first inaugural address "I understand a proposed amendment to the Constitution -- which amendment, however, I HAVE NOT SEEN -- has passed Congress, to the effect that the Federal Government shall never interfere with the domestic institutions of the States, including that of persons held to service." If he hadn't even SEEN the amendment it would have been difficult to "lobby" for it. This is only one example of many historical errors made in these videos. I understand why Southerners feel the need to defend their forbears' actions but really what Grant said in his memoirs is correct that theirs was "one of the worst causes for which a people ever fought and one for which their was the least excuse."
Sturdley, since the ads are only 60 seconds each it is difficult to expand at length on any given topic. You are taking the comment more literally than was intended. In any case, the alleged inaccuracy that you point out is immaterial to the argument and has no effect on its outcome.
By mentioning the amendment, Lincoln was clearly arguing in FAVOR of it and offering it as a reason why the South did not have to secede.
Futhermore, Grant was full of bovine excrement, that is, when he wasn't drunk or butchering his own troops in senseless frontal attacks. The South fought to defend itself against invasion and that's a darned good reason for fighting anytime, anywhere.
We are Camp 1440, the California Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The Sons is a historical organization dedicated to preserving the memory and the good name of the Confederate soldier, sailor and marine. We have no other purpose either intended or implied.
All male Confederate descendants are eligible and welcome to join regardless of race, religion or national origin.

Policy on Hate Groups
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is not a hate group. The California Division of SCV does not knowingly allow anyone with ties to hate groups to join and has removed, and will remove, anyone from its ranks who expresses racist sentiments. Specifically, the following is not allowed and will be grounds for immediate dismissal:
-Attempting to recruit fellow SCV members for racist groups -Disseminating racist literature to fellow SCV members, either through mailings or in person.
ALL MEMBERS MUST BE AWARE OF THESE RESTRICTIONS, AS THEY WILL BE RIGOROUSLY ENFORCED.
Loving the South and defending its culture, symbols and heritage does not mean hate. In fact, many SCV members are descendants of African-American, Catholic, Jewish, Native American, Hispanic and Asian Confederates. The contributions of these groups to Southern culture have made it a beautiful and unique region. To deny their descendants membership in our organization would betray our principles and the very ancestors we honor. We welcome all descendants of Confederate soldiers, sailors, and marines or those who materially aided the South in its struggle for independence.
These TV spots are wonderful. Very well done indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon! I agree.

Excellent spots; thank you for them.
ReplyDeleteIf only we could get more people to see and contemplate them.
Shame on History Channel for it's egarness to supress any opposing view.
God save the South.
